omg, this is the exact cake my mom & her mother before her used to make & she's not vegan. It was called "crazy cake" 'cause it has no eggs, no butter...but vinegar! Supposedly developed during the depression when certain ingredients were hard to come by. certainly has a diff texture & taste v. regular cake, but I'll take crazy over omni any day

Vegangsta, I boasted about this cake in another forum and they probably are going to ask for the recipe. May I? I'll tell them that only you get to make it in the San Antonio area, so you'll still make the best cake around.

Aw man I knew I shouldn't have posted it! I should have just invited everyone to my house and had a cake extravaganza! Lol sure spread the recipe.

And I didn't like Vegantastic's cake as mush as I like my own, it had a funky taste to it and it took longer to prepare and bake. But it was still pretty good.

I still have to make my birthday cake (my birthday was beginning September!! but better late than never). So this weekend, will be my belated birthday cake (still hesitate about the candles though... what exactly are birthday candles made of anyway??? They are probably not very environmental friendly. Maybe they're not even vegan???).

there are soy candles but probably not birthday ones. the regular ones are paraffin, a petroleum product. Maybe you could put embed a shot of brandy (in a metal shot glass) and light that up!

Happy B-day Diana! Mine was early October, so I brought the ingredients to my parents house & made the cake for myself. And basically ate it all myself within the week!

Cake is in the oven! I just reduced the sugar by half, as I don't like my cakes too sweet.

Can't wait to eat it. And if it works out well, will be making one for the work colleagues for World Vegan Day next week (with a big label: VEGAN CHOCOLATE CAKE - ENJOY!!!)

Well it seems like it would be sweet with all that sugar, but i use raw sugar so it comes out perfect.

An update on the all-important chocolate cake issue: I had tried the second cake recipe while at my parents, and was not impressed. BUT it turns out that it's because of the flour & sweetener that I had to use. I just tried it again and it's wonderful! I have had trouble getting my oven to bake the other one evenly, I wonder if this one will be easier in that respect.

Chocolate cake is very important, I don't know why we've let this thread lapse.

i made this cake for my birthday party a few months ago and everyone loved it!!! Then I told them it's vegan
