If those who maintain that animal rights isn't "popular rethoric", and that is a qualitatively different proposal on our relations with other animals (human or not) had it difficult enough to differentiate this from animal welfare and "conservational" claims, now you have to know that Peter Singer -who isn't vegan and regard being vegan as a luxury- will participate in a so-called "International Animal Rights Gathering" in Canary Islands (Spain). This gathering includes groups like Adena / WWF that support animal experimentation, the Spanish Great Ape Project that, apart from their anthropocentric views, includes Jesus Mosterin as their Honour President, a Spanish philosopher who maintains in his book ¡Vivan los Animales! that being vegan isn't a neccesary consequence of our moral reasoning, and that we are entitled to eat other animals due to the trophic chain. Other member of this group, their Executive president, is Joaquin Araujo, a self-defined "animal farmer" (in Spanish "ganadero").
This gathering will also include [irony] well known animal rights groups as Greenpeace that defend the "right" of humans to murder fishes and other animals eat whales and promote it[/irony]. They will give a conference about "The defense of marine creatures".
There will be also a conference about breeding wild non-human animals, and on Friday 23rd May, speakers such as Pedro Pozas -who isn't vegan- will, nevertheless, talk about animal equality. Eladio Ferreira (who applauded the words of Pozas when he said in a GAP conference that "chimps are more than simple animals" and other anthropocentric claims) will talk as the president of Equanimal, a so-called animal rights organization who helps animal welfare / new-welfare groups like PETA, PACMA and others, and that regards Jane Goodall (the pro-vivisection, pro-consumption of nonhuman animals and supporter of nonhuman animal jails one) as a reference, about activism in the defense of animals. I suppose this will be about activism in order to convert abolitionism and animal rights in rethoric, just as the program of this gathering shows.

I am afraid I'll miss the event...
