The 1680 – Think about it for a second?

Postby ben1971 » Mon Sep 08, 2008 11:30 am

Hi everyone :)

A friend and I had what we hope will be a really good advocacy idea. It was inspired by the pamphlet produced by Gary Francione and also the Animal Food Counter on the Abolitionist Approach website. The text below is what we've produced to send to groups with the intention of getting members involved.

If anyone here can help distribute this idea and/or get involved with drawings we'd be grateful. We think this idea has the potential to get a lot of people thinking about the meat/dairy/egg industries and questioning their part in the abuse involved...

Here's the text:

"53 billion land animals are slaughtered every year worldwide for the meat and dairy industries. None of these deaths are necessary in any way.

This is too big a number to really comprehend but it becomes easier if we think of it as 1680 animals every second.

We are looking for individuals to help us launch an exciting new campaign concept that will highlight this massive death toll of animals killed for food worldwide.

Our aim is to produce a piece of eye catching imagery that may be used for campaign purposes. We wish to depict the 1680 killed every second with a montage of pictures, drawn by you!

We hope to gather 1680 drawings of individual ‘food’(?) animals with each representing one animal death. You do not need to be an accomplished artist to participate, a doodle will do! Or you may make your drawing as detailed as you like, however, please note that your drawing should measure 3.5cm by 4.5 cm, like a portrait passport photo. For time saving purposes we would appreciate it if you would resize your own images if necessary, however we will do this if you are unable. We welcome all different styles as we wish to make this montage as interesting and eye catching as possible. Colour or black and white images are fine and above all have fun!

We regret that we cannot guarantee everyone’s picture will be used as we are unsure at this stage of how many entrants we will receive.

Please send your pictures to the1680@hotmail.co.uk

We will be setting up a website (the1680.org) that will have information and ideas for what we, as individuals, can do if animal exploitation concerns us. The website will not promote welfare reform, it will promote abolition rather than regulation.

There are also facebook (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2 ... 463&ref=mf) and myspace (http://groups.myspace.com/the1680) groups.

We hope you enjoy yourselves and thanks again for supporting this project – you will be helping to make a big difference.

Wow, what an idea! Each animal is an individual, after all, so having different styles is completely appropriate. I'll post it in a couple of other forums where I'm registered. And a meetup group that I have.

And when I figure out the technology, I'll send a drawing too! :D

Someone in another forum thought they were supposed to depict an animal death. I thought it was just drawings of individual animals, to put a face to each death. Is that right? I'll let her know what you say.

hey :) oh yes, you're right - we just wanted pictures of the animals, rather than their deaths...i think the figure is enough of a shock and will get the message across...there are 6 pics on the myspace and facebook groups - only 1674 to go! ;)

Hi everyone,

We've been getting some pics in for the campaign and the facebook group seems to have taken off - over 170 members now! We only have 19 drawings but we're hoping to be featured soon in the vegan society magazine and I'm hoping to get a mention on the Vegan Freak podcast (once i find their email address!) so hopefully we'll push on from there. It's apparent that a fair few people have no access to a scanner so we've set up a Post Office Box for people to send their drawings to.

We're not going to be able to return your drawings so please take a copy if you want to keep the picture.

We want to stress again that (i hoped that everyone would realise they don't have to have any talent once they saw my picture!) you need have No artistic leanings to take part in this project, the object is not to produce the worlds biggest piece of fine art, it's to draw attention to the enormity of the problem of using animals as a means to an end so please help us by spreading the word and sending in your drawings.

the facebook group is here http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=24509063463

the myspace group is here http://groups.myspace.com/the1680

We will be working on the website but it's gonna take a while so apoligies that the only place to see the drawings are on these sites...

Thanks again for all your support,
Helen and Ben

Hey Helen and Ben!

I posted in the Earthlings' website forum. There are a couple of people there that are very talented at drawing, so I hope they will draw a little someone for your campaign!

My girlfriend is going to draw something too. I would love to, but I just can't draw. I rather stick to music, hehe.

Regards,

Samuel.

ps: Just "food" animals, right? Well, we have a huge range anyway, since humans eat almost every single species on the planet.

Hi Samuel,

Yeah just 'food' animals, though as you said that doesn't really restrict it too much!

Thanks loads for helping to spread the word about this...at the moment we have a lot of interest but not many pictures...you your friends and your girlfriend will really be helping us out :)

The only reason I drew a picture was because I thought it would be a bit crap to help start this and then not do one myself...I'm no artist but I'm (slightly) less embarasses about my drawing than I thought I would be...you might be too... ;)

Thanks again,
Ben
